app design

Adventure Buddy

For my first school project I designed a digital prototype of an app tailored towards skiers

Overview

Assignment

Assignment

Assignment

We were given the task to design a user friendly digital prototype of a mobile application. The prototype should focus on one central user journey - in other words how the user will navigate through the application in order to solve one specific problem or need. The prototype should be developed in Figma.

Background

Assignment

Finding suitable ski partners has always been a bit tricky for skiers who want to explore new areas, travel and accomplish the adventure of their dreams. Roaming in the mountains involves certain risks and you need to trust your own skills and the skills of your partner. For several years skiers have resolved to using facebook groups to get in touch with each other. Adventure Buddy is an application that helps skiers to find skipartners with similar goals, objectives and skillset.

The process

Research

Research

Research

I began by exploring the challenges skiers face when trying to find partners and mapping possible directions for the project. Through market and competitor research, I identified an opportunity for a more focused community platform designed specifically for skiers. An interview with a target user revealed that availability, compatible skill levels, trust and safety are central when choosing someone to ski with.

Research

During the define phase, I brought the research findings together to clarify the target audience, their needs and the values that would guide the product. Insights from the user interview helped me identify compatibility, trust and relevant skiing experience as key priorities, providing a clear direction for the design process.

Design & Prototype

Building on the research insights, I created a clear user story and mapped the journey from opening the app to finding and contacting a compatible ski partner. I then developed the concept through paper and digital wireframes before creating a visual identity inspired by mountain environments and the app’s core values of adventure, trust and expertise.

Test

To evaluate the prototype, I invited people from the target group, classmates and teachers to explore it and share their feedback. Their insights led to improvements in the structure, layout, colours, buttons, text sizes and component consistency, reinforcing the importance of iteration throughout the design process.

Reflection

Thoughts

Adventure Buddy gave me the opportunity to dive into the fundamentals of interaction design and experience the complete design process firsthand. As the sole designer, I worked across research, ideation, visual design, prototyping and usability testing - learning how each phase informs the next and how feedback strengthens the final experience.

This project was especially meaningful to me because it brought together three things I care deeply about: design, the outdoors and community. It has given me a strong foundation in UX/UI, prototyping and design thinking, while making me even more curious about how thoughtful digital products can help people connect through shared interests.

Future Improvement

The next step would be to expand Adventure Buddy from a partner-finding tool into a broader community platform for skiers. This could include features for discovering groups, events, trips, destinations and guides, as well as creating activities and sharing photos or trip details.

I would also develop the prototype with more responsive interactions, including scrolling, adjustable distance filters, toggles and additional feedback states. Further usability testing would help determine which features bring the most value and how they should be prioritised.
